The Gila Woodpecker has black and white bars on its back, a light brown breast, sides and flanks, and in males a red crown. Its range is mostly southern Arizona. The only other similar woodpecker is the Red-bellied Woodpecker. The Red-bellied Woodpecker, has a red nape of the neck in both males and females, are a red crown only in males. Photo 0806 shows the limited area of the red crown in the male.
