Like the Blue-throated and Magnificent Hummingbird, the range of the Lucifer Hummingbird Calothorax Lucifer in the U.S. is limited to Southeast corner of Arizona. Since we were successful in photographing the Blue-throated and Magnificent Hummingbird, before we left I wanted to get a photo of the Lucifer Hummingbird to fill out the trio of these uniquely Southeastern Arizona species. As I mentioned on the Home page, Maya told us the best place to find the Lucifer was at Mary Jo Ballator’s Ash Canyon B & B in Hereford. When we got there Mary Jo pointed out which of the 20 or so feeders the Lucifer was most likely to visit. Amazingly, after about 30 minutes a Lucifer showed up on one of those feeders. That has to be one of the most remarkable examples of a specific geographical location for a bird.
The Lucifer Hummingbird has a distinctive curved bill and the male has a long gorget that is more scalloped than the Broad-tailed Hummingbird.
