One of the prized sightings for birders in Southeastern Arizona is the Elegant Trogan Trogon elegans. In season it is found on the beautiful South Fork Road south of Portal branching off the Cave Creek Road. The buzz at the Cave Creek Ranch was that one or more Elegant Trogons were currently ‘in residence’ so we took off one morning to find it. One of the advantages of having other birders around is that all we had to do was drive down the road until we saw other birders pointing. We stopped, asked “Where” and there it was. Unfortunately, it kept its back to us. Thus I have included a photo of the very similar Ecuadorian Trogan Trogon mesurus that I photographed at Cerro Blanco, Guayaquil, Ecuador on the way to the Galapagos.
