The Spotted SandpiperActitis maculariusor macularia, is a small shorebird. Together with its sister species the Common Sandpiper (A. hypoleucos) they make up the genus Actitis. They replace each other geographically; stray birds may settle down with breeders of the other species and hybridize. Their breeding habitat is near fresh water across most Canada and the United States. They migrate to the southern United States and South America.
The non-breeding birds, as he 8000 and 9000 series, lack the prominent spots on the breast. These were photographed at the Sarapiqu River, Taracoles River and at the Hacienda Solimar, Costa Rica.
The identification of the breeding Spotted Sandpiper is made easy by the presence of large dark spots on its breast and abdomen. This photo 2444 was taken at the Salton Sea, North Shore, CA.
The 4039 and 4041 photos were taken at Los Pantanos de Villa.
