The Apapane (Apa pon e) Himatione sanguinea on the third of the common birds of Hosmer Grove. It is Hawaii’s most common forest bird. Like the I’iwi it is bright red with black wings, but has a smaller beak. It feeds on both nectar and insects and is common all islands.
On our return trip to Hasmer grove at Haleakalã I obtained 5 new Apapone photos (2407-3513). Photo 3513 shows all of the features that distinguish it from the ‘I’iwi – white abdominal under parts and a shorter, less curved bill. The photo of a juvenile Apapane was taken by Javan Rasnake.
