The Northern Cardinal is as common in Hawaii as it is in parts of the U.S. Its striking red color lights up any habitat. It was imported form the U.S. in the 1920’s and is present on all of the islands. The male has a distinctive red crest with black around the bill and a red breast and brownish-red wings while the female is largely grey with red tinged wings and tail and red at the tip of its crest. The chunky beak is like that of a finch on steroids.
The male Northern Cardinal is beautiful all red bird. The female has much more grey. There is a black a rim all around the orange bill. See the page on the Pyrrhuoxia+Northern Cardinal hybrid for interesting variations on these themes.
