The Green-winged Pytilia (Pytilia melba) is a common species of estrildid finch found in Africa. It is found in most of Africa south of the Sahara. It has two subspecies groups, nominate melba in the south and the northerly citerior, which are sometimes treated as separate species.
Estrildinae may have originated in India and dispersed thereafter (towards Africa and Pacific Ocean habitats).
They are easily recognized by their grey heads, red-face and bill, white and brown barred abdomen, yellowish-green wings - for which they were named - and their orangey-red rump and upper tails.
